Tim Stead: Magician With Wood

Tim Stead was one of Scotland’s most innovative wood sculptors and furniture designers. The film follows his widow Maggy’s rollercoaster journey to protect the future of The Steading - the extraordinary home Tim sculpted from wood which is now Category A listed in the Scottish Borders – and his extensive furniture and sculpture collection. Maggy wants to retire to France. Her pension plan has always been to sell The Steading. An estate agent advises her that the house is so special it must be protected for the Nation. To this end, the Tim Stead Trust is formed. As they battle to raise enough money to buy the Steading from Maggy, through the remarkable stories of the passionate people Tim worked with the film explores how Tim developed as an artist and created some of Scotland’s most popular public art, including the formation of Café Gandolfi in Glasgow and the Millennium Clock in the National Museum of Scotland. The film also explores how Tim believed in putting back in more than he took out. He wanted to plant trees to replace what he used. With a group of pals, he established the first community woodland in Britain which kickstarted the community land ownership movement in Scotland. Ultimately, the film inspires people to live creatively and sustainably with native trees. It is a film with a head and a heart, with themes of love, friendship and wonder underlying it.
